Lasers have revolutionized the treatment of many dermatological conditions. One of these is the pigmentary disorders. Lasers have been widely used with variable success for the treatment of pigmented conditions.
What Is Hyperpigmentation?
Skin Hyperpigmentation is the name of the patches of skin on your body that are darker than your natural skin tone. The darkened skin patches are caused by the overproduction of the brown pigment, melanin, in your body. Too much melanin production or excess melanin leads to any of these four main types of hyperpigmentation: melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, sun damage, and medical conditions.
Melasma is a condition most commonly found in women who take oral contraceptives or who are pregnant. Skin pigmentation on the face or those brown patches that present on the skin are typically found on the cheeks, forehead, nose, upper lip, and chin.
Works For Every Skin Tone
Skin tone can play a role in the intensity and length of hyperpigmentation treatments. People with fair, medium, and dark skin tones can use some of the same therapies, but people with darker skin need more time for the treatment to work.
Fair skin responds well to most hyperpigmentation procedures. The following might be off limits if you tan easily or have darker skin: high-beam lasers and IPL therapy
Medium skin tones may find the following options helpful: chemical peels and microdermabrasion
Darker skin might benefit from: glycolic acid, kojic acid OTC, lightening creams, microdermabrasion, lower-strength chemical peels, laser treatments, but only when used at lower intensities over a larger number of sessions
